Breakwater Talks: Challenging Standpoints, Opening Horizons
[one_half padding=”20px 20px 20px 20px”]
Amorpha Youth Foundation launched the Breakwater Talk series as a weekly public format in December 2016. Hosted by our moderators, the talks explore a wide variety of topics presented by local and foreign guest speakers. Participants in the audience acquire and exchange knowledge and opinions in various fields of expertise from different cultures & communities around the world. Supported by our partner venues and organisations, we are aiming to create a healthy discussion forum, exchange opinion, expand intercultural knowledge, actively involve foreign diaspora, help achieve fluency in a range of key languages, especially by young people.
We have selected as venues the local spots which these languages and their cultures inhabit. We are proud of our partners in this initiative and have developed Breakwater Talks also to celebrate their international contribution to advancing a richer local culture into the future. The original four venues included the French Institute in Varna based at the local Alliance Française , Spanish-owned vegan Mapache Café & Bakery, US-owned Shakespeare & Friends Bookshop and Japanese-owned Orient Express Japanese Tea Room. We have since gradually changed and expanded our pool of venues to include Korean restaurant Kimbap, Bistro Europe – French cuisine, Contemporary Space gallery & café, Varna Games board games social club, My Café by Ani Boland nested in Varna’s largest bookshop, Russian-owned Bistro Mango, German-Bulgarian owned Murro Café nested in an archeological site, Varna’s best-known healthy food space Hatori Café & Bakery, open-air concert venue Horizont Green Stage, vegan Living Food Restaurant, and Amorpha-run urban art space Arhis Gallery.
Our objective in the series has been to create an authentic linguistic and cultural setting. Hence, each discussion will be conducted in its title language without offering language interpretation. The format features weekly session in several widely spoken languages: Spanish, French and English to which we have gradually added Bulgarian and Russian. Among the lesser spoken languages in the community, we have selected Japanese from the very beginning of the sessions, gradually adding to it Korean and Portuguese always used in the talks in combination with a supporting language – Bulgarian or English, or both. Our ambition is to continue to enrich Breakwater Talks by adding new languages and topics into the format.
This is an opportunity for young people and for the local community in general to broaden their cultural awareness of the world, discover and stay up to date on topical issues, discuss their views, enhance their language competence and enjoy offbeat networking.

The talk is a rare opportunity to explore with expertise the cross-section of Zen Buddhism and Architecture. Shared concepts of void and space determine both the theoretical and practical implicatioins of this exciting encounter between one of the most popular philosophies/practices and a major professional field defining the space we inhabit. As a zen master and a university professor in architecture, our guest speaker, Ionut Koshin, will direct us in this seemingly complex topic with his practical approah, professional expertise and personal experience as a meeting point of these two fields.
○ Zen: practice of simplicity
○ Zen and space/place: “mentated space /bodily space”, “space as separation / space as connection”, “the limits of space”, “containing space / mutually-created space”, “smooth space / folded space”, “unfolding the space”
○ Where Zen and Architecture meet: ma-space, kekkai (making a boundary)

Ivayla Veleva received her formal education in the Fine Arts at Chicago Academy for the Arts in the US. Graduating in 2010, she decided to pursue a cartooning major at New York School of Visual Arts. After a period of emotional wandering and self-discovery, her artistic and introspective journey prompted her to take more serious interest in psychology. That brought her back to her hometown and Varna Free University where she is currently pursuing a degree in psychology. Among her favourite urban and art spaces are the Art Institute of Chicago, the Steppenwolf Theatre, small galleries in Pilsen and Humboldt park. Ivayla is interested in painting, animation, cartooning, psychology, storytelling, exploring the art of communication and understanding others.

There is a cloud of ambiguity surrounding the world of financial markets and we will try to raise the curtain on this exciting area of modern life. Decisions to save inevitably exploit the powers of financial markets – from “risk-free” deposits, to investments in stocks or bonds to alternative investments in art, land, real estate, and to the pricing bubble territory of bitcoin. We will look at the what science can teach us about investing and human behavior. We will revisit some of the milestones of contemporary financial economics and the people who developed it into the science that it is with its unique blend of mathematics, psychology and economics.
○ What is rationality and are people rational in their decision?
○ How do we think about risk and how do we make decision under uncertainty?
○ Are human decisions predictable and is there a mathematical structure in their craziness? Can we make predictions?
○ When is the market “right”?
○ What is the academic advice on investing?

Step into a Filipino home and you’ll see each person mixing up their meals with unique combinations of condiments.

Halina’t subukan…”

The Philippine komiks (comics) industry started in the 1920s and quickly reached wide audiences. Major publishers like Liwayway produced titles on everything from social ills to superheroes and folklore — stories that would influence TV, film, and popular consciousness. However, the industry flagged during the imposition of Martial Law, and again in the 1990s. With major publishers all but gone, the komiks industry nonetheless found new life in the world of independent publishing and webcomics.
Kate Loyola is an avid geek and comics studies scholar. She studied comparative literature at the University of the Philippines, where she wrote an honors thesis on trauma and comics journalism. She currently works as a communications executive at a Manila-based consulting firm.

Ayuune Sulley visited Varna for an acoustic concert preceded by a public talk in English & Bulgarian part of the Breakwater Talks series. Only a few decades ago, Kologo, the instrument used by Sulley, was used solely as an accessory tool by local shamans in their healing rituals and only at home on special occasions. Distinguishable in it are the musical and cultural codes dating back prior to the pentatonic music of Mali (to which researchers trace back the roots of American blues). Mystical trance is another key element of kologo music. Ayuune Sulley performs both traditional music from North Ghana as well as socially engaged self-copmposed songs among whose topics are tomorrow’s uncertainty, the fate of Africans who leave for Europe and leave their culture behind, the problem of inequality between men and women in today’s world.

Beauty is an important value in South Korea and the rest of the world easiy associates one with the other. Nowadays, South Korea contributes to the foremost trends in beauty culture, make-up and overall personal outlook. At the same time, there has been a growing dissatisfaction with common attitudes of treating women as aesthetic objects . We explored the distinctive features of South Korean feminism at present and discussed recent developments in which South Korean women joined the global MeToo movement against sexual harassement towards women based on professional and social hierarchy. We were joined online by our special guest based in Seoul who is a freelance writer specialised in culture and literature and who used to work at a Korean government facility.

At our first 2018 Japanese event, together with our new host and fresh addition to our Japanese Breakwater team, we looked into the habits, trends, objects etc. that make Japan appear strange in the eyes of the outsider. We explored diverse and unusual ways of entertainment, rules and peculiarities by means of cultural explanation and illustration in context, photos, video, music, etc.
Nika Fukita, 18 years, is the older sibling in an international family with a Japanese father and Bulgarian-Russian mother. Nika was born in Bulgaria where she still lives but every year travels to Tokyo to spend time with her Japanese relatives, discover more about Japan and the new exciting places in the capital. Nika shared with us exciting stories, precious experiences and vivid accounts of Japanese weirdness from the perspective of insider/outsider, focusing on what she knew we would find strange or inexplicable and bringing us closer to understanding it.

Together with our new hosts Ichiro and Oksana, we will talk about the fine aesthetic experience of autumn 秋 (あき) “aki” in Japan.
